FredAs an educator from Washington State and a community-based video production volunteer for the John Howard Society, Laichwiltach Family Life Society and School District 72 in Campbell River, British Columbia, I am always looking for ideas that will motivate students and maintain their interest in the learning process. I have a background in radio/TV production (specializing in student-produced educational media material) and a passion to involve students in the active production of motivational videos as opposed to passive viewing. For the past 2 years I have been involved with The Buddy Book Project, a pilot literacy program (at Ecole Willow Point Elementary) designed to assist children at the emerging reader level. The objective of the project is to offer an opportunity for fourth-to-sixth-grade students to create short, original, grade-appropriate video books that will assist emerging readers in understanding the "learning-to-read" process through a series of peer-generated educational material. The production process requires research, team work and the development of critical thinking skills. The students gain experience with cameras and computers but more important they finish the project with a "warm and fuzzy, feel-good feeling" knowing that they have helped their younger classmates 'break the code' in learning to read and me, well, I'm having just too much fun helping them along.
